Team Leader of Quantitative Trading
Location: Netherlands (Hybrid)
Overview
I am seeking a highly skilled and experienced Team Leader of Quantitative Trading to join the automated trading division of a well-established Dutch energy supplier. This division manages all trading activities in-house, including wholesale, balancing, and congestion markets.
This is a unique opportunity to lead the quant trading and forecasting team, with a clear pathway to eventually oversee the entire trading division.
Responsibilities
As the Team Leader of Quantitative Trading, you will:
- Lead and manage the quant trading and forecasting team.
- Develop, optimise, and implement trading and forecasting algorithms and models, including hands-on coding.
- Monitor and manage short-term positions in day-ahead and intraday markets.
- Translate time series data and market drivers (e.g., weather, outages, congestion, imbalance signals) into actionable model improvements and trading strategies.
- Establish and oversee the model architecture for trading and forecasting activities.
- Optimise the existing portfolio and collaborate with the supply side of the business to develop new customer and asset-backed products.
- Drive the implementation of new capabilities, including ex-post trading and third-party steering.
- Report to senior management on model performance, trading outcomes, and optimisation opportunities.
Qualifications
To excel in this role, you should possess:
- 5 to 10 years of experience in energy trading within a physical or asset-backed business. (Backgrounds in proprietary trading, banking, or insurance are not suitable for this role.)
- Proven leadership experience managing quants or data engineers, ideally with a formal team lead or managerial title.
- In-depth knowledge of day-ahead, intraday, balancing, and congestion markets.
- Strong programming skills in Python and/or SQL, with hands-on experience in developing trading algorithms.
- Expertise in time series analysis, statistical modelling, and forecasting, including familiarity with machine learning and/or reinforcement learning.
- Experience in setting up and governing model architecture in a live trading environment.
- A degree in a quantitative, technical, or economics discipline.
- Fluency in Dutch
Nice to Have:
- A PhD in a quantitative discipline.
- Experience applying reinforcement learning to live trading environments.
Day-to-Day
- Lead and mentor a growing team of quant traders and data engineers.
- Develop and refine trading algorithms and forecasting models.
- Monitor market conditions and execute short-term trading strategies.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimise the trading portfolio and develop innovative products.
- Regularly report on trading and model performance to senior management.
- Stay updated on market trends and integrate new data sources into trading strategies.
Benefits
- Contract: Permanent, 32 to 40 hours per week.
- Holidays: 26 days (full-time), with the potential to earn up to 2 additional days per year.
- Pension: Non-contributory pension plan.
- Additional Compensation: 50% allowance for weekend and public holiday work.
