The Role

We are looking for an experienced Technical Solution Architect to work within a large and complex digital environment supporting critical railway planning systems.

You will operate at the intersection of business, architecture and engineering , translating business requirements into scalable and secure technical solutions. Working closely with Lead Developers, Product Owners, Architects and DevOps teams, you will shape both the current architecture and the longer-term technology roadmap.

The environment is heavily focused on Microsoft Azure, Kubernetes, Infrastructure-as-Code and DevOps , so this role requires someone who is comfortable remaining technically involved rather than operating purely at enterprise architecture level.

Key Responsibilities

• Design high-level functional and technical solutions together with Lead Developers.
• Translate business requirements into scalable, secure and maintainable architectures.
• Advise Product Owners, IT leadership and Lead Solution Architects on technical solutions.
• Define and guide cloud architecture across Azure environments.
• Develop and maintain architecture roadmaps and target architecture.
• Ensure solutions comply with architecture standards, security requirements and relevant regulations.
• Coach DevOps teams on architecture, engineering standards and continuous improvement.
• Support automation initiatives aimed at improving software quality and delivery speed.
• Review architecture and engineering documentation and deliverables.
• Guide teams around CI/CD, Continuous Delivery and DevOps best practices.
• Balance non-functional requirements including security, cost, availability, scalability and performance.
• Work closely with architects and engineering teams across multiple application domains.

Requirements

• HBO/WO working and thinking level.
• At least 5 years of recent experience in a Solution Architecture, Technical Architecture or comparable role.
• Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) .
• Minimum 4 years of experience with Infrastructure-as-Code, particularly Terraform .
• Strong experience designing and managing CI/CD pipelines within Azure DevOps .
• Experience implementing or configuring monitoring platforms such as Datadog .
• Strong knowledge of cloud and infrastructure architecture.
• Good understanding of networking technologies including routers, VPNs, load balancers and firewalls.
• Knowledge of security, data, management guidelines and requirements engineering.
• Experience with architecture methodologies, frameworks, modelling techniques and tools.
• Strong understanding of non-functional requirements such as scalability, security, performance, availability and cost.
• Experience working within large and complex organisations.
• Strong experience with Scrum, SAFe and DevOps environments.
• Comfortable coaching DevOps and software engineering teams.

Nice to Have

• TOGAF certification.
• ArchiMate certification or experience.
• Microsoft Azure certifications.
• Kubernetes certifications.
• Previous experience within transport, logistics, infrastructure or similarly complex operational environments.
• Experience modernising large application landscapes.

Profile

You are a technically strong architect who can move comfortably between architecture discussions and engineering teams . You can communicate effectively with senior stakeholders while still understanding the technical detail required by developers and DevOps engineers.

You are collaborative, pragmatic and comfortable working in environments undergoing significant technological and organisational change. You actively share knowledge, coach teams and help establish scalable engineering and architecture standards.
